Types of Sweden Study Visas

There are two types of Sweden student visas for international (non-EU/EEA)  students depending on their duration of time in Sweden.

  • Sweden Schengen Visit Visa (Short-term visa – Less than 90 days): applicable for short courses, apprenticeships, seminars, vocational training, exchange and mobility programs, or university single courses.

  • Sweden Residence Permit (Long-term visa – More than 90 days): applicable for full-time degree programs such as undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

EU and EEA nationals are not required to apply for a Sweden student visa or residence permit. However, students planning to stay in Sweden for more than a year are encouraged to register with the Swedish Population Register and get a personal identity number.   

Eligibility Criteria for Sweden Student Visa

To be eligible for a Swedish student/residence permit the following conditions should be met:

  • The university degree program must be full-time

  • You are required to have proof of admission

  • You have paid the first tuition fee installment (if there is any fee to be paid)

  • You possess international health insurance

  • And have a passport valid for a minimum of six months

Sweden Student Visa Requirements

The documents required for a Sweden student visa include the following:

  • Visa Application Form: with complete information and your signature.

  • Passport-size photographs: taken within the past six months.

  • Valid passport: with a three-month validity from your arrival date into the country.

  • Academic documents: including certified copies of transcripts, degrees, or achievement certificates.

  • Admission letter: stating you have been admitted for a full-time course and the duration of the course.

  • Bank statement: that proves you can support yourself (minimum 840 EUR/month or 165 EUR/month if food and accommodation are free).

  • Proof of Health insurance: with coverage for health expenses and even if the university/college covers it.

  • Receipt of visa fee: proving the application fee of 80 EUR for a student visa and 133 EUR for a residence permit.

  • Language proficiency: no specific requirement for a Sweden study visa. Proof of language proficiency in either English or Swedish will be the requirement of universities. However, the Swedish Migration Agency only asks for the university acceptance letter.

    Language proficiency tests accepted by Swedish universities include PTE Academic, IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo, and C1 Advanced. 

  • Additional documents: demonstrating you are a recipient of a student aid or scholarship. In the case of a Ph.D., you are receiving a grant or employment in research.

Sweden Student Visa Application Process

You can apply online at the Swedish Migration Agency Website or your nearest Swedish Consulate or Embassy in your home country. The processing time for Sweden student visa will be shorter since the documents will reach the Swedish Migration Authority directly. In order to avoid delays, make sure you have added all the required documents. 

Visit the nearest Swedish embassy or consulate in your country for your photo, and fingerprints, and to collect your residence permit card. 

You will receive a decision regarding your visa/residence permit via email and you have to book an appointment and collect the documents with the official decision. The decision document will be also sent to your university. 

Visa processing time for Sweden is 90 days and usually depends on the applicant’s nationality, Sweden’s embassy in that particular region, the number of applicants, and in single cases, sometimes the specific requirements. Considering this, it is advisable to apply for a visa/residence permit at your earliest convenience. While applying for a visa at your local embassy, ensure you submit all the necessary original documents.

Work Permit in Sweden

As an EU/EEA citizen, you can work in Sweden without a work permit. However, for non-EU/EEA citizens work permit is required. The employer in Sweden can apply for it on your behalf at the Swedish Migration Agency.

There are no hourly restrictions, allowing you to work as much as you desire during your university studies. However, it is advisable not to neglect your studies since you will need to prove progress and achieve satisfactory results.
