Citizens from EU/EEA countries are exempted from holding an Italy Student Visa to enter Italy. If a stay is longer than three months, even the aforementioned countries are required to obtain an Italian residence permit after three months. If you are already in Italy and need a long-stay visa then you have to leave the country and apply for a long-stay visa from your home country.

Non-EU nationals cannot apply for an Italian residence permit without an Italian long-stay visa.

Italy Student Visa Application Process

  • Secure admission at an Italian university

  • Contact or visit the nearest embassy or consulate: Check out the visa process for your home country such as preparing the required documents and scheduling an interview for your visa application

  • Attend a visa interview: Submit a complete set of original documents along with their copies. Pay the fee for this application

  • Wait for the decision: You will receive the visa result in writing

  • Apply for a residence permit: Within eight days of entering the country, you have to apply for a residence at your nearest Questra (a type of police station). However, EU students can complete this process within 20 days.

  • Receive a permit: You will be issued with a temporary document as the actual permit may take several months to be processed.

  • The Italian government has announced the admission of 452,000 foreign workers (outside EEA) to Italy for 2023-2025. The flow decree (Italian Decreto Flussi) was published in the Official Gazette on October 3rd, 2023. At the same time, 136,000 quotas are available for the year 2023. Applications can be submitted for entry in the current year from December 2nd, 2023 until December 31st, 2023. 

  • According to a new law of the Italian government, the quota number for residence permits and work permits will be issued every three years instead of annually.

  • The government of Italy has allowed the extension of residence permits, indefinite work contracts permit, and self-employed permits for foreign nationals for up to three years

  • With a student visa, you can work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week or 1,040 hours per year. 

  • After degree completion, you can convert your student resident permit to a work permit.

  • You can bring the immediate family to Italy under an Italian Family Visa, after applying for “Nulla Osta” authorization.
