Introduction

Germany is a popular destination for students who want to study abroad. The country boasts many highly-ranked universities and vibrant cities with rich history, cultural activities, and nightlife. These factors make it an appealing place for students to both study and live.

In recent years, Germany has seen a rise in the number of international students choosing to study there, making it the third most popular destination for them. The reasons for studying in Germany include low tuition fees, top-ranked universities, countless degree courses, low cost of living, job opportunities for international students, cultural and historical heritage, and the opportunity to learn a new language.

If you intend to study in Germany, you need to first obtain a Germany student visa. This is a special kind of permit that allows international students to live and study in Germany for a certain period.

To apply for a Germnay student visa from Pakistan, the first thing you need to do is to get accepted into a university in Germany. Once you receive an acceptance letter, you can proceed to apply for a study visa.

Types of Germany Student Visa

There are three types of Germany student visas:

Student visa:

International students enrolled in full-time university programs can obtain the standard German student visa.

Cost: The cost for applying for this visa type is EUR 75. 

Processing time: The processing time is 6-12 weeks or up to 4 months.

Student applicant visa:

This type of visa is granted to applicants who wish to visit German universities in person to gain admission. Students must provide evidence of eligibility for admission and provisional acceptance at a German university.

Cost: The fee required for this particular visa application is EUR 80.

Processing time: The processing time for this visa is estimated to be between 15 to 30 days.

German language course visa:

Students who have an acceptance letter from a German university and need to attend a language course or preparatory program can simultaneously apply for both a student visa and a German language course visa. This visa specifically applies to German language courses. 

Cost:  The cost for applying for this visa type is EUR 60.

Processing time: The processing time is estimated to be 2-3 months.

Documents Checklist for German Student Visa

If you’re planning to study in Germany, there are certain documents that you need to prepare to apply for a Germany student visa. Here’s a list of the requirements:

  • Visa application form

  • National passport

  • Two photocopies of the passport

  • Birth certificate

  • Marriage and child birth certificate (if applicable)

  • Three recent passport-size photographs

  • Evidence of your or your parent’s income (bank statement of last 6 months)

  • Certificate showing that all your expenses will be covered by an organization (in case of scholarship)

  • Deposit confirmation of €11,208 in a “German Blocked Bank Account”

  • Receipt of processing visa fee

  • Acceptance letter from a German university

  • School leaving certificate (if applying for an undergraduate program)

  • A degree certificate (if applying for a master’s/PhD study visa)

  • Proof of German or English language proficiency (depending on the type of course selected)

  • Health insurance (public €120/private €300)

 

Note:

You must submit all original documents including your passport. The embassy will retain your passport during visa processing, but all other original documents will be returned on the same day.

Germany Student Visa Application Process

Once all the required documents have been collected, the candidate must schedule an appointment with the German embassy or consulate in Pakistan. During the appointment, the candidate will need to submit the completed application form, pay the appropriate fees, and attend an interview. Pakistani candidates can arrange their appointment either in Islamabad or at the consulate office located in Karachi.

Note:

If you need to get an attestation, visa, or passport application done at the German Embassy, you can only make an appointment online. Unfortunately, requests made via phone or email are not accepted.

After Reaching Germany with a Student Visa

After arriving in Germany with a student visa, Pakistani students should follow these steps:

Secure Permanent Housing

To ensure a smooth academic experience, it’s crucial to secure permanent accommodation even before arriving in Germany. Candidates should search for suitable housing and relocate promptly upon arrival.

Obtain German Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung)

Having health insurance is mandatory for Pakistani students in Germany. They can choose between public or private health insurance based on their circumstances and available resources.

Acquire the Certificate of Enrollment

The enrollment process, also known as matriculation, is necessary in Germany. Before commencing their studies, all students must register for classes at their respective universities. Admission notification from the German university is required for enrollment. Upon acceptance, students receive notification via mail and are issued a student ID after processing their enrollment.

Open a Bank Account

To effectively manage finances while studying in Germany, Pakistani students must open a local bank account. This is essential for handling rent, bills, and other expenses.

Register Residential Address

Students from Pakistan must register with the relevant authorities within 14 days of arrival in Germany. This involves visiting the resident registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) to provide their current address. Upon submission of necessary details, students receive a registration confirmation called ‘Meldebestätigung’

Apply for a Residence Permit

Within the initial three months of arrival, Pakistani students must apply for a residence permit. This entails visiting the office responsible for registering foreigners, the Ausländerbehorde, and submitting required documentation.
